The Gap of Dunloe is situated approximately 12 km west of Killarney town. It is a narrow mountain pass forged between the MacGillycuddy Reeks and Purple Mountain by glacial flows. The name comes from the Irish dun Lóich (“Lóich’s fort”), named after the chieftain of a clan who lived here in ancient times.
